Ways to Give

Your generosity allows the National Academy of Engineering to proactively address the critical issues and challenges facing our nation. The NAE invites you to consider the variety of ways available to support its mission and choose what is right for you.

Giving Online

Online gifts are the most immediate way to support the NAE. To give online, you can use our secure online donation form and follow the instructions provided. You have the ability to make your gift as a one-time payment, or as a convenient recurring gift. Recurring donations can be paused, adjusted, or canceled at any time and they are predominantly paperless. A cumulative tax receipt will be issued to you annually.

If you would like to pause, adjust, or cancel an active recurring gift, please email giving@nae.edu.

Giving by Mail

Our printable donation form offers an easy way to mail your contribution. Checks made payable to the "National Academy of Engineering Fund" should be mailed to our secure offsite processing center at:

Giving by Phone

Please call the Office of Development at 202-334-2431, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm (except Federal holidays). You will be asked to provide the information requested on the donation form.

Give in Honor or Memory

Donating in honor or in memory of someone is a wonderful way to pay tribute to their life. Give in honor or memory through our online donation form.

Employer Matching

Did you know that your gift may be eligible for matching dollars if a corporation or foundation with a matching gift program employs you or a family member? This is a fantastic and easy way to double or even triple your donation! Enhance the impact of your gift by contacting your current/previous employer, or that of a family member, and inquire whether there is a matching gift program. All matching gift forms can be mailed with your gift to the NAE. The National Academy of Engineering’s tax identification number is 23-7284092.

Donor-Advised Funds

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a mechanism that simplifies the administrative burden of fulfilling your philanthropic objectives. A DAF offers the favorable tax benefits of giving directly to charities with added flexibility around timing of gifts. An increasingly popular charitable vehicle, DAFs are an excellent way to both simplify your charitable giving and facilitate your strategic philanthropic goals.

If you have a DAF with Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or the Bank of New York Mellon Charitable Fund; DAF Direct enables you to recommend grants to the NAE directly from our website by using the DAF Direct LinkThe National Academy of Engineering’s tax identification number is 23-7284092.

All DAF grant recommendations should be mailed to our secure offsite processing center at:

National Academy of Engineering
Office of Development
P.O. Box 936138
Atlanta, GA 31193-6135

Qualified Charitable Distributions

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) can save you income taxes, as well as help minimize your taxable estate and fulfill your philanthropic wishes. The gift amount counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution, and your taxable income is lowered by the amount of your QCD.

Important points to consider:

  1. You must be at least age 70½.
  2. The gift should come directly from your IRA account, in the form of a check.
  3. The gift may come from a Traditional or a Roth IRA (special exclusions may apply to other types of IRA accounts).
  4. Although there is no tax deduction, there is NO income tax on the withdrawal.

Please have your IRA plan administrator send a check to:

National Academy of Engineering
Office of Development
P.O. Box 936138
Atlanta, GA 31193-6135

Accompanying paperwork should identify (1) your name and address, and (2) whether your gift is intended for a specific program or for general unrestricted support. The National Academy of Engineering’s tax identification number is 23-7284092.

Giving Stocks/Securities

A gift of long-term appreciated stock (held for more than one year) allows you to avoid capital gains tax. When itemizing your deductions, you can deduct the fair market value of the stock. If you choose this option, please submit a completed stock gift form and contact us at 202.334.3823 so that we can accurately credit your contribution.

Giving Professional Awards or Honoraria

Donating professional awards, honoraria, prizes, or other forms of payment can be a creative way to support the work of the NAE while potentially avoiding the taxable income. If you would like to learn more about how to donate an award or honoraria to the NAE, please contact the Office of Development at 202.334.2431 or giving@nationalacademies.org

Planned Giving

Planned Gifts, also known as deferred or legacy gifts, are any gifts where the contribution to the organization is made well into the future. These gifts are often received to benefit the organization after the lifetime of the donor(s).

What are some common types of planned gifts?

Planned gifts can take many forms and are often unique to each donor’s financial and tax situation; however, some types of gifts are more common than others. Common types of planned gifts include:

  • Documenting gifts in wills and revocable living trusts,
  • Designating as beneficiary in retirement fund,
  • Establishing charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts, and
  • Donating real estate

Visit our planned giving website to learn more about the opportunities that planned gifts can present to you. If you’d like to learn more about how you can document a planned gift with the NAE or let us know about an existing planned gift, please contact Elana Lippa, Director of Planned Giving, at 202.334.1817 or ELippa@nae.edu.
