The Engineering Education Leadership Institute served to imbue leaders of the engineering academic community with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to create environments that will successfully prepare engineering students for the technical and social challenges of practice in the 21st Century.
Objectives
  • The Engineering Education Leadership Institute served to imbue leaders of the engineering academic community with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to create environments that will successfully prepare engineering students for the technical and social challenges of practice in the 21st Century.

With support from NSF (EEC-0501669), Intel Foundation, and National Instruments, the Engineering Education Leadership Institute (EELI) was envisioned as a mechanism by which to imbue  the leadership of the engineering academic community with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to create environments that will successfully prepare engineering students for the technical and social challenges of practice in the 21st Century.  A preliminary pilot was held in 2005 and, building on findings from the 2005 pilot, a large-scale pilot was offered in 2006. 

Key lessons learned:

  1. To be successful, the selection of topic areas should be driven by the attendees,
  2. While engineering deans valued a venue in which to pull together their leadership teams, they preferred to learn in an environment with current and aspirational peers as well as high-level representatives from industry,
  3. Presenters should focus on practical examples, tied to immediate campus needs, and communicated in terms familiar to academic engineers.
