Message from Tsu-Jae King Liu, President of the National Academy of Engineering

I am honored to begin my service as President of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The NAE plays an important role in strengthening our nation by advancing engineering, advising on emerging technologies, and sharing knowledge that supports innovation and progress.

Engineering touches nearly every part of our daily lives—from the devices we use, to the infrastructure we rely on, to the medical technologies that improve health and longevity. With rapid advancements in technology and a growing demand for engineering talent, now is the time to build greater understanding and appreciation for this vital profession.

The United States faces a significant challenge: meeting the need for hundreds of thousands of new engineers annually. At the same time, technological literacy among the public is more important than ever. The NAE is working to support educators, engage young people, and foster greater public awareness of the value of engineering.

We also know that how we talk about engineering matters. When we highlight the creative and meaningful ways engineers help people and benefit society, we can spark interest—especially in students who are considering various career pathways.

As I shared in my welcome video, my own path into engineering was shaped by a desire to make a positive difference. I believe that message resonates far and wide, and I encourage you to explore what engineering means to you and to the world around us.

Thank you for your interest in the work of the National Academy of Engineering. Let’s work together to shape a better future for all!

With appreciation and warm regards,
Tsu-Jae Liu
