The NRC Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Technical Assessment Board provides biennial assessments of the scientific and technical quality of ARL’s research, development, and analysis programs, focusing on ballistics sciences, human sciences, information sciences, materials sciences, and mechanical sciences. This interim report, summarizing the findings for the first year of this biennial assessment, presents the board’s review of the following in each area: terminal ballistics (ballistic sciences); translational neuroscience and soldier simulation and training technology (human sciences); autonomous systems (information sciences, mechanical sciences); and energy materials and devices, photonic materials and devices, and biomaterials (materials sciences). The final report will incorporate the findings of both this report and the second year of the review, which will involve examination of additional elements.
