Alton D. Romig Jr. is the executive officer and chief operating officer of the National Academy of Engineering. He previously led Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Advanced Development Programs, aka the Skunk Works®. Romig spent many years at Sandia National Laboratories, rising from technical staff in 1979 to executive vice president, deputy laboratories director, and chief operating officer. Elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2003, he is a Fellow of TMS, IEEE, AIAA, and AAAS, and an Honorary Member of ASM International. He also holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in materials science from Lehigh University.
