Biography

Yannis C. Yortsos is dean of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering and holds the Dean’s Kaprielian Chair, roles he has held since 2005. A member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), he served on the NAE Council from 2017 to 2023 and on several committees. Since 2022, he has served as editor-in-chief of PNAS Nexus, the National Academies’ open-access journal. In 2022, he and three colleagues received the NAE Gordon Prize for cofounding the NAE Grand Challenges Scholars Program in 2009. He was elected an associate member of the Academy of Athens in 2013 and a foreign fellow of the Indian Academy of Engineering in 2024, and is a fellow of AAAS and AIChE, as well as an honorary member of AIME. In 2024, he helped establish the School of Advanced Computing within USC Viterbi. Yortsos earned his diploma from the National Technical University of Athens, which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2025, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
