Biography

Nicholas A. Peppas is a professor in biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, pediatrics, and surgery and pharmaceutics at the University of Texas at Austin. His group has pioneered research in biomaterials, drug delivery, and bionanotechnology, which blends modern molecular and cellular biology with engineering principles to design next-generation medicines and devices. He has 1,800 publications, with 220,000 citations (H=215). He has been awarded the NAE Simon Ramo Founders Award, the NAM Adam Yarmolinsky Award, the Biomaterials Global Impact Award, the AAPS Global Leader of Pharmaceutical Sciences Award, and the Acta Biomaterialia Gold Medal. Peppas is a member of the NAE, NAM, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Academia Europaea, European Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Inventors, Canadian Academy of Engineering, Chinese Academy of Engineering, Indian National Academy of Engineering, Korean Academy of Science and Technology, Mexican Academy of Sciences, National Academy of France, Royal Academy of Spain, Academy of Athens, Greece, Romanian Scientists Academy, International BME Academy, and the Academy of Texas. He is the editor in chief of Regenerative Biomaterials (Oxford). He holds a Dipl. Eng. from NTU of Athens (1971), a ScD from MIT (1973), and 13 honorary doctorates and professorships. In May 2022, he was recognized with the Ellis Island Gold Medal of Honor.
