Stuart Parkin (NAE/NAS) is managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Microstructure Physics, Halle (Saale), Germany, and Alexander von Humboldt Professor at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. His research interests include spintronic materials and devices for advanced sensor, memory, and logic applications, oxide thin-film heterostructures, topological metals, exotic superconductors, and cognitive devices.
He has published over 685 papers, has more than 126 issued patents, and has given roughly 1,000 invited talks around the world. His research has been recognized with honors too numerous to mention. He received the 2009 IUPAP Magnetism Prize and Neel Medal, the 2012 Von Hippel Award from the Materials Research Society, the 2013 Swan Medal from the Institute of Physics, the 2014 Millennium Technology Award, the 2021 King Faisal Prize for Science, and the 2024 APS Medal for Exceptional Achievement in Research, among other accolades.
Dr. Parkin received his PhD from the University of Cambridge.
